SEXUAL AND REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH PROJECT FOR YOUNG PEOPLE AT HIGH SCHOOL AGE ?

Background Information : Although SRH is included in high school curriculum, after the meetings done with the education personnel and students, it is seen that the courses on these issues could not be effective and productive enough. It is either that students are not participating because of shame or that teachers prefer to skip these issues because of lack of focus of attention in the classroom. The family structure in the province is traditional and the communication between the elderly and young members of the family on reproductive health is out of question because of traditions, norms and values of the region. As a result, it is seen that young people are under the influence of superstitions and knowledge picked up here and there by listening and so, not facing with the changes occurring in their bodies during adolescence in a right way causes unhealthy consequences. 

Project Summary: The project aims to contribute in increasing access to appropriate and accurate information on SRH, sexuality and STI/HIV/AIDS prevention for young people in one year and to contribute in increasing awareness among young people as to the risks of unprotected pre-marital sexual intercourse in one year. The target group is 3500 young people living in Ardahan, especially high school students living in Ardahan Province and 14-18 years of age sportsmen/women of Ardahan Youth and Sport Club. In order to reach the target group effectively activities are designed in the framework of social activities. Health clubs in Ardahan high schools will realize peer trainings, visits to health institutions and seminars. Furthermore, two plays related to SRH will be written by professional script writers and performed by student drama clubs to young people in Ardahan. A story booklet will be produced on the basis of real experiences relating to in appropriate applications relating to SRH and access to accurate and appropriate information will be ensured. Projects duration is 1 year.

Project Goals: Specific objective of the project has been developed within the two priority areas of SRH Programs SRH for Young People to contribute in Increasing access of 3500 young people living in Ardahan, specially of high school students studying at high schools in Ardahan Province and 14-18 years of age sportsmen/women who are member of Ardahan Youth and Sport Club, to appropriate and accurate information on SRH, sexuality and STI/HIV/AIDS prevention for young people in one year, to contribute in increasing awareness among 3500 young people living in Ardahan, specially of high school students studying at high schools in Ardahan Province and 14-18 years of age sportsmen/women who are member of Ardahan Youth and Sport Club, as to the risks of unprotected pre-marital sexual intercourse in one year.

Project Beneficiaries: 3500 young people living in Ardahan, especially of high school students studying at high schools in Ardahan Province and 14-18 years of age sportsmen/women who are member of Ardahan Youth and Sport Club, 

Implemented Activities:

I. The Announcement of the Project and the Projects Stakeholders Ownership

II. Visits to the local and public authorities and local NGOs

III Meetings with the High Schools Principles and Authorities of the Youth and Sport Clubs

IV. Meetings with School- Parents Associations

V The Training of the Teachers who Covers Sexual Health and Reproductive Health Subjects within the Scope of their Courses

VI. The Training of the Expert Trainers working at Public Training Courses and Antrenors of Youth Sport Club


VII. Training of the Young People within the Scope of Health Clubs and Ardahan Youth and Sports Club Activities was undergone.

VIII. Health Clubs in High Schools were created and supported.

IX. Training of the Volunteer Students Working at Health Clubs and Young Sportsmen/women of Youth Sports Club who would Give Peer Training has completed.
