INTERNATIONAL BLUE CRESCENT RELIEF AND DEVELOPMENT FOUNDATION IN IZMIR EARTHQUAKE ZONE

As of November 4, 114 people were killed and 1,035 injured in the earthquake, which was off the out-of-base Izmir's Seferihisar region on Friday (October 30th).

The magnitude of the quake, which lasted about 15 seconds, was announced by Boğaziçi University Kandilli Observatory Earthquake Research Institute as 6.9, by AFAD as 6.6 and 7.0 by the U.S. Geological Survey Center.

17 buildings were demolished in the earthquake that hit the Bayrakli and Bornova districts of Izmir in particular. Search and rescue teams are still working in the debris area.

The severe earthquake felt in certain parts of the entire Aegean and Marmara Region is recorded as the largest earthquake in the history of Izmir, the aftershocks are unsettling in the region's people and surrounding provinces.

While there are thousands of survivors of the quake who lost their homes and are struggling to hold on to life in tent cities, the International Blue Crescent Relief and Development Foundation Emergency Relief Team moved towards the region on the 2nd day of the quake to identify and speed up efforts to help them.

The International Blue Crescent Foundation (IBC) started relief efforts with the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality, AFAD and all non-governmental organizations, operating in the field in cooperation with and with the support of Doctors Without Borders (MSF). Also, the region’s needs analysis was made in Bayrakli Municipality Social Assistance Affairs General Directorate's communication tent.

With the Emergency Relief Team and volunteers, the priority in the first place is for the International Blue Crescent Foundation to distribute for 1000 families protective hygiene kits for, masks and disinfecters against COVID-19, including 2000 sleeping bags, 2000 diapers and 2000 blankets. IBC will continue its’ humanitarian efforts to heal the wounds of earthquake survivors in the coming days.
