FIRST First Aid Training Centers

Establishment : November 2004 / Kocaeli, May 2005 / Ankara ,December 2005/ İstanbul

Goal : Establishing sustainable financial and institutional education and community centers where trainings in first aid are given and social campaigns and other activities to increase the knowledge and public awareness about first aid are organized.

Supporting Institutions : FIRST First Aid Training Centers Kocaeli Branch was established with the financial support of Malteser ( Germany ).

General Information

Thousands of lives are lost or become permanently incapacitated due to industrial, traffic, indoors accidents in addition to natural disasters also resulting with productional and manpower losses and sometimes causing psychological and social disorders within the family members. The fatality ratio is 10 % within five and 45% within thirty minutes following such incidents. . The scenes that frequently take place in visual media about inappropriate approaches after an accident or fire is the indicator of lack of consciousness and knowledge of the community. Many individuals are affected by injuries and illness in our daily life. The improper first aid approaches during such incidents are being more harmful to the victims than being helpful, also causing casualties, disabilities or long periods in recoveries. In 2002 the Ministry of Health has declared legislations and standards to first aid training and the necessity of employing first aid personnel within private and public institutions.

Having implemented various projects in Kocaeli since the 1999 earthquake, our foundation has fulfilled the necessary preparations starting as of September 2004, obtained the necessary permissions from the District Directorate of Health, “ FIRST First Aid Training Center ” became active by November 2004.

Training the personnel and the parents of the Blue Crescent Education and Rehabilitation Center for the Mentally Challenged Children in Kocaeli was the first activity of the trainings. In due time, over 150 standard first aid trainings were given by the leadership of social services specialist Mrs.Şengül Gökmen, reaching to more than 2500 individuals, including the leading companies of Turkey, the mentally challenged children's parents and personnel of municipalities which is found essential to have first aid trainings due to their important social role within the community.

Dr.GönülDemir, Dr.Nuray Bingöl and Mrs. Sacide Karagöz, whom are known as leaders of first aid training trainers in Turkey have joined the foundation in the beginning of 2005 and “ FIRST First Aid Training Center ” became active in Ankara by May 2005. In a very short period the center became an indispensable address for first aid trainer trainings.

With the awareness of the countrywide deficiency in this field, our foundation decided to establish another training center in İstanbul during the year 2005. “ FIRST First Aid Training Center ” İstanbul Branch became active by December 2005 and gave standard first aid trainings to more than 500 individuals by the leadership of Dr.Ebru Özer.
