IBC STARTED THE PRODUCTION OF COMPRESSED STABILIZED EARTHEN BLOCKS IN BAM

The transportation of machines was a turning point for the safe building project.

The Project’s objective was to make four demonstration units for the promotion of this safe building model (hollow interlocking compressed stabilized earthen blocks) to the people and the government bodies, but after mitigations, research and analyzing the local opportunities, there was decided that two structures shall be sufficient to promote and demonstrate the safe building practices in Bam. So at this point, two structures are planned to be constructed: one of 40m sq to be placed in the official housing exhibition organized for the companies and people of Bam and the other of about 80m sq, to be build in the city center, as proposed by the Task Force in Bam.

IBC safe building strategy document received the input of eminent experts from the Islamic Housing Foundation, like the Chief Engineer Mr. Judi, who approved the plan of the first demonstration house at the exhibition area and allocated the land for it, welcoming the technology proposed by IBC and skipping the hassle of getting the plan and technology approved by the Standard Department in Tehran. The first stage of this project is “Production” to be followed by the second one which is the “Construction”. With the machines arriving in Bam in the last week of June, the training was initiated on 3rd July 2004 with 12 participants on the first day, which increased to 18 participants on the second day and 28 participants on the third day. This has been a good sign as the IBC team had not gone to lookout for trainees anymore, as they are coming by themselves and have a very good enthusiasm of learning and working.

Permanent housing is the vital problem of the region which needs to be solved within a short time period.

IBC has been seeking for other activities that will enrich the opportunities of the earthquake victims.

The trainees had been given a theory and practical training for the first three days and then they started the production. The training sessions were as following: Introduction session, Introduction to Auram Press 3000, Machine assembly and maintenance, Production of Blocks. The Participants have been divided into two groups. One group has been identified for the first direct production process (with one machine) and at the end of the first week a production of 300 Full blocks per day (in 4 hours work) was achieved. As the second group has people who joined after 2 days after the commencement of the training, the focus is presently on make them efficient for the future work.

The implementation of the project has been moving as planned with minimal hindrance, as the major hindrance has been the strong winds that make the process of sieving of soil and sand and also the work on the platform difficult. In regards to the raw materials like soil, sand and cement the IBC staff are exploring the possibility to minimize the costs to demonstrate the technology as an efficient technology not only in regards to design, material and earthquake resistance but also in regards to the costs. The IBC managers introduced the financial tracking system for this project forward to monitor all the details of the materials purchased and the costs incurred in a way that at the end of the project any one willing to analyze the data shall be able to bifurcate the costs for Production, Construction and Labor.
