IBC IS HONOURED WITH THE SUCCESS OF VEYSEL TUVGAN, THE MENTALLY CHALLENGED BOY WINNING TWO GOLD METALS IN PARALYMPICS 2008-IN SHANGHAI CHINA

 

Veysel TUVGAN student in our Izmit Blue Crescent Mentally Challenged Special Education and Rehabilitation Center ”, won 2(two) gold metals in atlethism- one in 50 m . race, and one in long jump- at the Shanghai Paralympics. Thus, he has been a source of great pride not only for us, but also for his family and for our country. Paralympics took place between September 28 th and October 12 th , 2007 in Shangai and more than 7000 disabled athletes from 150 countries participated.


Veysel Tuygan was the only Turkish athlete winning two medals in Paralympics ,so the Prime Minister of Turkey Mr Erdogan honoured him with a special medal too.

Izmit Blue Crescent Mentally Challenged Special Education and Rehabilitation Center is a facility offering special education and rehabilitation services for the most vulnerable mentally challenged persons. On 4 July 2005, with the support of Genel Directorate of Social Services and Child Protection, this facility was established to provide the special kids with the necessary environment for their life, to help them acquire the skills so they can contribute to family economics, and to help them integrate with the society.

The facility has started with 30 students in 2002 but now it is offering its services for more than 220 students. Due to our foundation`s principles, we do not charge the students for any of the services offered nor do we discriminate among those who have access to state medical insurance against those who do not. In order to increase the social integration and build self-confidence of our special kids and of their families, we organize social events like picnics, exhibitions, and garden parties.

Being aware of its importance in creating self-confidence we also do give due importance to sports activities such as basketball, swimming and athletism. Veysel Tuygan was one of our most successfull children and he has been qualified to the National Paralympic team of Turkey and won socrwes of similar competitions before.

Tuygan and his collegues are benefiting from the facilities and trainers of our center .Just few months before The Basketball team of Izmit Blue Crescent Mentally Challenged Special Education and Rehabilitation center won the first title at Marmar Region Basketball competition.

Through such successes children increase their self confidence and our center manages to draw the attention of public opinion in a more effective way to the problems of mentally challenged.
