NEIGHBORHOOD REHABILITATION AND SUPPORT IN BAM. WINTER HEATERS FOR THE FAMILIES IN KHAYAM STREET.

After the last needs assessment done by the IBC rehabilitation team in the neighborhood placed along Khayam Street in Bam, it resulted that the most pending need for the cold season (even if the days are worm, the desert winter nights are very cold) was the heating. The people in the neighborhood, the ones left aside from camps or who refused to leave their lands, are still living in containers, small prefabs or tents.

Therefore, on the 25 th of November 2004 , IBC team distributed electrical heaters to 185 families in need in the area. These products were happily received by the inhabitants, as their will able to warm up their only one room shelter during the cold season. Also it has to be mentioned that the authorities are providing electricity for free to the areas were the people affected are settled.

Another activity to be implemented by IBC in the same area is going to be the distribution of winter jackets to children and students.

Background information

on IBC's small scale Rehabilitation and Community awareness project

in Khayam / Bam

Four months ago, IBC started a Rehabilitation project (small initiatives and community mobilization for participation) in the neighborhood placed along Khayam Street in Bam, called in the local slang – Siyah khooneh (“black houses”). This neighborhood is one of the most vulnerable neighborhoods, with low income and delinquency, located in the North Eastern part of Bam, in Zone 2, being during crisis under the Khorasan province.

The rehabilitation team had door to door visits in the neighborhood and mobilized people for joint meetings for the improvement of neighborhood's situation. There were created Neighborhood Initiative Committees (NIC) and a list of priorities was set. The rehabilitation team and the NIC's collaborated closely with the Municipality, Shora and other local administration departments.

After 4 months of work in the area and at the end of the project, there were implemented the following activities:

•  Clearing the debris and the garbage from the main street and the alleys of the neighborhood;
•  Placing garbage boxes and having an agreement for the regular cleaning of the place by the Municipality workers;

•  One Children's Safe Place (for children of kindergarten ages), on the land of the playground of Seyed Taheraldin Park, at the corner of Khayam Street, place suggested by the Shora of the city and also by the Municipality (this place was run by IBC and will be handed-over to Behzisti in Bam – Social Welfare Organization of Iran, due to the fact that a great part of the children attending are mentally challenged and they need proper care which can be provided by this specialized institution);
•  Rehabilitation of the park of the area and fixing the playground;
•  One sewing workshop for 30 ladies from the neighborhood, established in a container that IBC shifted in the neighborhood. Regarding the situation of his facility after IBC will finish its program, there is a discussion with Behzisti, which already has a program in vocational training for women in need, to be handed over to them.
•  Digging 10 miters well for collecting the water and building a wash dishes place for the families living in the tents in Khayam Street ;
•  Other.
