1. Cleaning the place & Garbage collection
AIMS:
creating a “safe place” for starting the activities with the community;
improving the sanitation of the area;
preventing infections and other health problems caused by the presence of garbage in improper places;
STEPS:
Meeting the representatives of Khorasan province (responsible for zone 2 which already met the field team and offered their possibilities and will to collaborate) for and the Municipality (taking into account IBC's good relationship with the Municipality and the Mayor) for ways of cooperation in this initiative;
Mobilizing volunteers from the community for the work (same with needed tools);
Streets and canals cleaning;
Find a truck (or tractor) for transporting the garbage and debris from the streets (the place of depositing the waste is going to be decided by the Municipality);
Placing garbage boxes in certain places of the street (the type of it is going to be decided in cooperation with the municipality);
Ensuring the periodical collection of the garbage in the neighborhood by the Municipality workers (in the meeting with the Municipality can be discussed);
2. “Summer camp” place for the children of the neighborhood
AIM: Creating a “safe place” for the aprox.100 – 150 children of the community (between 4 years old to 12), for free time activities, during the summer holyday.
STEPS:
Meeting with representatives of the Fermandari for the permission of using 150m2 piece of which has already being identified (beginning of Khayam street, left corner of Setahredi, near the public bath), but there is need for the approval of the local authorities (Fermandari);
Establishing the “summer camp” place. A simple construction of wood and palm leafs roof will be built by volunteers from the community, with the technical assistance of Objective 3 team. (procurement of materials and tools; identifying the volunteer workers);
Meeting with the volunteer teachers for discussing the activities with the children;
Visits to be played to the parents of the children;
The storage of the materials used for the free time activities (toys, books etc.) was discussed already with the NIC and there is going to be explored the best possibility of storage (in the women's container – 3 rd initiative - or in one of the volunteer teacher's house);
3. Training and Income generating activity for women
AIMS:
training of aprox.30 women in the community in sewing cloths and artificial flowers;
ensuring an income generating opportunity for women in the neighborhood;
support women's initiative of improving their families' economical situation;
STEPS:
Shifting a container from the Turkish container camp Isfahan2 (unused because of its school shape and because of its damages) to the neighborhood (crane and trailer for transportation);
Placing the container in the vicinity of the “Summer camp” place, but on the private property land offered by one of NIC members (and father of one of the lady trainers);
Fixing the container (putting metal plates in the windows, metal door, unolit replacing the plastic of the inside walls, electricity installation etc.;
Purchasing facilities for the Income Generating Workshop: small tables with short legs for putting the machines, carpet, cooler, locks, shelves, cabinet etc.
Purchasing 5 sewing machines;
Involving one of the volunteer trainers in purchasing the necessary for starting the training (different color and texture of cloth, plus the specific materials already listed by the volunteer trainers);
Training in two shifts;
Meetings for sustainability of the project;
Supporting women in marketing their products;
OBSERVATIONS:
The initiative list is an open one and taking into account the availability of funds from the objective1's budget, other small activities are to be considered.
Positive developments:
The team and the NICs managed to solve a problem which was threatening the health situation of the members of the community (the main water pipe was broken and the mater was running on the streets; community used the water from that broken pipe). After meeting with the Water Department of the city, the main water pipe was fixed and the water tested.
Women are the most active members of the community.
IBC team managed to mobilize successfully volunteers for the activities to be undertaken, so money for work can be used for the direct costs of the small projects.
The Khorasan province in charge of the zone 2, where is Khayam street, sent its representatives to meet IBC's field team and informed on their will to collaborate and support the activities in the neighborhood (well known for its bad fame – prostitution and drug addiction – and bad economical situation etc.)
IBC team together with a member of NIC went to the Iranian Red Crescent and asked for a medical team to come in the neighborhood, as there are a lot of diseases and infections and the people don't go to the established medical units in the city, because of lack of money etc.
Concerns:
Men are not always cooperative and when they are, they do not want to be in the meetings together with the women (“cultural problem”).
The attempt of IBC team to mobilize and get involved the youth in the area had not much of success, up to now.
